May 18, 2010 on the diet for 1 year.

I have been on the MS Recovery Diet for almost 1 year and I'm feeling a little discouraged. I'm not feeling much better and at times I feel worse. I feel I'm 90% compliant with the diet and continue to find new receipes to try and add to my intake of appropriate foods. I have had several health problems since starting the diet not connected to MS. I have always been healthy except for M.S. I was diagnosed 35 years ago and started to use a cane in 2001. I walk with a cane or walker in the house and use a scooter when I go to work or to the doctors, shopping etc.
I'm open to any suggestions if anybody has any, please let me know. Thanks, Vikki

Thanks for getting back to

Thanks for getting back to me, I guess I just feel a little down because I was feeling better and now I'm getting the fatigue back and the legs are tired..I feel if I give up fruit, which is my way of having dessert I don't know what else I can subsitute for a quick snack that taste good....but I 'll keep trying I feel the diet is healthy even if you don't have an autoimmune disease. Thanks for getting back to

Thanks for getting back to me...I'm sure there are several foods that I'm eating that are contributing to my lack of success. I have found eggplant, green pepper, and soy are trigger foods for me, so I have stopped them. I haven't had the ELISA test done but it's on my list. Thanks again, Vikki

Vikki, One thing I forgot in

Vikki,

One thing I forgot in my reply to your post is a reminder about healthy oils and rotation. These may be part of your 90% compliance, but just a reminder if they are not. Also, depending on what your other health issues are, they can have an effect on the MS, as with even a minor infection, etc. Temperature also can have an effect in those sensitive to either heat or cold. Be persistent and hopefully you'll see more improvements.

Hi Vikki, I agree with the

Hi Vikki,

I agree with the above reply/comment which recommended going strict 100% with the diet at first. As the Diet book recommends that is the best way to start. Only after beginning to see results should you begin to try adding other foods back in, which is recommended waiting about a year. Please don't be discouraged as the previous comment said. Only after eliminating all possible triggers, can you possibly find what your individual problems are. Something in that 10% you are still consuming may be the culprit. All the above suggestions the last person gave are great, such as, searching the other topics, others' experiences, and contacting Ann and Judi for help. The results are worth it. Best wishes to you.

Hi Vikki, it is easy to

Hi Vikki, it is easy to become discouraged when it feels like everyone else is posting success stories, dont give up! I followed the diet for 20 months before I noticed any improvement and I was about 99% compliant. I had eliminated sugar, yeast, milk, eggs, gluten, legumes, all processed food and after a couple of months I also eliminated fruit. From my readings I worked out I had a candida problem. The elimination of fruit gave me a short lived increase in energy and cured my sinus problems. About a year after that I noticed that white potatoes were giving me sinus problems...it took me a very long time to work that out. I stopped eating white potatoes, the sinus improved ever so slightly but my MS symptoms continued on their steady decline. I was becoming so ill and so discouraged I decided to give this diet a last ditch attempt and go strict and cut out all grains, all nightshade family ( since potatoes were a problem for me) and all starchy vegetables ( also because of the potato problem and my sugar problem). I very quickly got very much worse and really thought I was on my way down. However, after a couple of weeks my mood improved, I started to feel less tired, I was sleeping better and I was feeling a bit stronger and I am delighted to say after about 10 weeks I noticed an improvement in my legs. My advice to you is to give "strict" a go. Be 100% compliant, no cheating, trust me it is worth it and nothing tastes as sweet as success. If you use the "search" section on the left of the screen, type in key words like "strict", "Paleolithic", "grain free" and see how others have coped in the past. You may also like to try detoxing your body, liver cleanses, coffee enemas, skin brushing are all useful. Try also a good digestive enzyme with each meal and make sure you are not constipated. You may also like to use the contact section to the left and contact Judi and Ann for advice taylored to you, give them details of your other illnesses and maybe even a sample of your diet for a couple of days. Good Luck. I look forward to reading your success story!
