Going Grain Free

Hi! I thought that I would start this as a new topic! I am on day 6 of going grain-free. I first tried this a few weeks ago and had very tough withdrawal symptoms after the first day. Then I started a more gradual approach which is working better.

I am on day 6 now and I no longer have headache and the absolute exhaustion is gone. My biggest concern is that I am very irritable. I am almost mean to people that cross me in even the smallest ways... I am also a little bit weaker with my walking.

I can't say that I've noticed any improvements ~ I think it is too early for that ~ but somehow I feel hopefull. Perhaps it is just NO PAIN ~ NO GAIN thinking, and because this is hard I expect that it will work.

My work has been particularly stressful this week ~ and in the past I would go for a run or a power yoga class to relax and then maybe have a beer or a glass of wine with a nice pasta meal. I know that stress is a factor in this disease, but it hard to get rid of stress without the outlets above...

Would love to hear from others who are coping with the grain-free life.

Hi Kathleen, I have now been

Hi Kathleen,

I have now been at this about a month. I did have a little quinoa, after someone baked something especially for me with quinoa flour...otherwise I have been pretty strict. I feel great mentally and I am not so irritable now. However my walking hasn't improved yet. I did get a blood test and found that I had low iron. This may be contributing to my poor walking. Unfortunately the doctor said that iron pills can cause constipation or diareah ... this is just one more thing to complicate reading symptoms...

Anyway, I know that I can mentally handle the challenges of going grain -free and I am going to keep at it through the summer to see what healing it will bring.

Good luck to you and let us know about your progress!

Mary Beth: I recently came

Mary Beth: I recently came off corn; it's in everything BTW and also on about Day 6 or so. Feel like salt reduction (from no tortilla chips) is good, and I don't really miss it. I feel better mentally for not doing it, but physically, can't tell yet. I eat quinoa and some rice, but even rice is problematic if I have more than a little.... Also, I have found time in my busy day for 10-20 minutes of meditation to just chill. I need to! I am with you on grain-free - let's hope for some good signs here. Good luck, and thanks for starting this topic. Kathleen
