Survey about MS medicine vs Ms diet

Hi everyone! I'm interested to find out how many MSers out there are following just the diet or the diet while still on MS medication.
Hopefully I get some replies.

For starters, I am following the diet and also participating in the trial for oral MS medicine. Have started the diet at the same time as the medicine and had only one relapse after 2 years (real mild, only sensory symptoms) which lasted 2 months. I had strayed off the diet for a while prior to the relapse so it's no surprise, I paid the price.
Apart from that I have no symptoms whatsoever.
So is it the diet.... or the medicine.... or a combination of both???

Nicole S. I do copaxone and

Nicole S.

I do copaxone and have been on diet almost 2 yrs. Diet has helped all but walking. Was dx 2003, Rebif till 2009. Have not experienced major relapse incident, but walking is worse. Also that may be due to repeated sprains in "good" ankle and quad. Diet has eliminated lifelong headaches, numbness around ribs, extreme fatigue and heat sensitivity. Scared to go off meds, though.

So I just found out what I

So I just found out what I have been taking during the trial I am in. I have been taking the real drug for the past 2.5 years... and following the MS diet for the same time. I got diagnosed 2 months before the trial but been having symptoms for half a year prior to that, they have always been sensory. During the last 2.5 years I had one relapse with complete remission, no new symptoms but a repeat of old ones.. I have strayed off the diet a few months before the relapse... was that a coincidence? Or a result from straying off the diet?

Now it's really hard to make a decision, if I had been on placebo then I would quit my trial right away, but now that I know I have been on the drug I am starting to wonder if I am ready to be medicine free. I know the diet works, but I just hope I am doing it right so that if I decide to go without drugs I will be okay.

As they say though, no medicine stops MS, it only slows it down, so if as I remember I had been relapsing every 3 months, now I relapsed once in 2,5 years!!! That couldn't have been because of the drug alone, that must've been because of my diet.

Soon I get to see my MRI scan and then I shall decide on what to do. One thing I know for sure is that I don't want to take medicine all my life, I know this can be fixed by other means, but I must say that I am too scared to take that step just now..

Hi Dingo, In response to you

Hi Dingo,

In response to you question about diet and meds, I'm wrestling with the same quandary. I've had success with Copaxone for nearly 9 years, other than a brief disastrous dr.-prescribed change to Rebif. I only had a couple mild relapses on Copaxone and no MRI progression of disease. However, I still had problems with fatigue, weakness, etc., with heat, and all the usual symptoms. However, since going on the Diet a year ago in November, that has changed. I've had significant improvement overall, physically, mentally, and emotionally. You can read my post "diet results" of a few days ago. My MS doctor, not the one who switched me to Rebif, is so impressed with the Diet results. Due to tissue damage from daily injections, I've gone to every other day injections, with no effect. My dr. is not comfortable with me going off the med altogether, but said he'd be OK with is 3 times/week. I'm so confident with the Diet that I feel in control of my symptoms because I can see clear evidence of the correlation between food and symptoms. I'm so confident that I don't anticipate having relapses with the diet, but I'm still too afraid to go off the meds completely. Maybe I'll get to that point somewhere down the road, or if I continue to run out of injection sites, I'll have no choice. Here's hoping you can make a decision, though if you're in a trial, you may not have a choice for the duration of the trial.

Best to you,

Hi Dingo I have been on

Hi Dingo
I have been on copaxone for nearlly 3 years, and have been more or less relapse free for the last 2. I started the diet in july 2008, but must admit to quite a lot of straying due to this year having been an extremely stressful one. Saying that, im still relapse free, so like yourself, wonder if its the meds or the diet!! I like to think its a combination of both, i`ve considered coming off the drugs, but as im not very focused at the moment, im not confident enough. When i get myself back on track i`d definately consider kicking them into touch!!
